Ghana has introduced new road traffic rules prohibiting preaching, hawking and other activities that may distract drivers or passengers on moving commercial vehicles.
The provision is contained in the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026, L.I. 2519, and follows the passage of the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025, Act 1153.
Under the new rules, anyone whose activities distracts a driver or passengers while a commercial vehicle is in motion could face a fine of between 10 and 50 penalty units, or a prison sentence of up to eight months.
The government says the measure is aimed at reducing distractions and improving road safety.
The Ministry of Transport has commenced nationwide public education on the new requirements and is urging road users, commercial drivers and passengers to familiarise themselves with the updated regulations.
The new rules form part of broader efforts to strengthen road safety and improve compliance with Ghana’s traffic laws.
