In the lead-up to the New Patriotic Party’s January 31 flagbearer election, prominent NPP presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has taken to social media and campaign stops to court delegates, insisting that he is the candidate most capable of reclaiming the presidency in the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Agyapong, a businessman and former MP for Assin Central, used a post on Thursday to urge delegates to look beyond personalities and select a leader with the electoral strength to return the party to power from the opposition. “Let us not just elect a flagbearer for the sake of it. Let us, for the first time, choose a flagbearer who truly has what it takes to win power for the NPP in 2028,” he wrote, appealing for votes based on his perceived electability rather than tradition or loyalty.
Hon Ken Agyapong’s campaign messaging has blended confidence about his winning potential with concrete promises on pressing national issues. He has repeatedly emphasized his focus on job creation, industrialisation, and youth empowerment, portraying himself as the aspirant with both “ideas and creativity” to tackle Ghana’s economic challenges — particularly unemployment among young people.
This narrative, he argues, resonates with grassroots delegates who want a candidate capable of winning broad support across demographic groups and restoring the NPP’s fortunes after its 2024 election defeat.
While Agyapong positions himself as the one “who can win election 2028,” his bid has also attracted both support and scrutiny within NPP ranks.
In some regions, delegates and local party figures have publicly backed his claim that he is the most likable and electorally viable flagbearer, arguing that his grassroots appeal could be decisive in the party’s bid to return to government.
At the same time, voices within the party have called for unity and cautioned against divisive rhetoric, suggesting that the contest with other aspirants — including former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia — be fought with respect and a focus on party cohesion.
