Chairman Wontumi Is Sick In Prison, NPP leadership are afraid to disclose his condition - Abronye Alleges

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has claimed that former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is sick in prison.

Abronye alleged that NPP leaders are reluctant to disclose Wontumi’s health condition for fear of worrying party supporters.

He insisted that reports suggesting Wontumi is doing well should not be trusted.

“I am telling you today that Chairman Wontumi is sick. It anybody tells you that he is fine, that is a lie.
NPP followers and supporters, if any of the party’s leaders tells you that he is well, it is a lie. Chairman Wontumi is sick.”

Abronye also attributed Wontumi’s alleged suffering to what he described as false accusations against the former regional chairman.

“They don’t want to say it because supporters will get worried, so don’t let anybody lie to you. Even if the prison authorities say he is fine, it is a lie. He is suffering because of lies that were fabricated against him,” he stated.

Wontumi has been held at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison since his conviction in July in a case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.

The conviction followed an Accra High Court ruling that found him guilty of offences linked to mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. He was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment, with the terms imposed on the two counts to run concurrently.

However, Wontumi is challenging the ruling. His lawyers filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026, seeking to overturn his conviction and sentence.
