Athletic Club forward Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from the Ghana national team, the Black Stars, bringing an end to his four-year spell with the team.
The 32-year-old announced his decision in a statement shared on X on Friday, September 11, saying he believes the time has come to close his chapter with the national team.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end. I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”
Williams switched his international allegiance from Spain to Ghana in 2022 and made his Black Stars debut later that year.
He went on to represent Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, before featuring in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reflecting on his time with the national team, Iñaki Williams said representing Ghana had given him an opportunity to reconnect with his roots and experience the pride of playing for the country.
“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”
The Athletic Club forward also thanked Ghanaians for the support and affection shown to him throughout his time with the Black Stars.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love you have always shown me.”
Despite stepping away from international football, Williams said his bond with Ghana would remain strong.
“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the @blackstarsofghana_ as one of you, wherever I am.”
