For many young people, choosing a career path is not always just about passion; sometimes, it means convincing the people closest to them that their dreams are worth fighting for.
This was the reality for Ghanaian musician Joel Ofori Bonsu known in showbiz as OliveTheBoy, who has shared a personal story about the threats he received from his mother after choosing music over medicine.
Despite his mother being a musician herself, he revealed that his decision to follow in her musical footsteps did not sit well with her.
He recalled spending his early years listening to his mother’s songs on cassette tapes, a memory he says played a major role in shaping his passion for music.
“I knew about composing music from a very young age. I was just a kid, maybe four, five or six years old. I knew about it because I had listened to my mom’s songs,” he said.
However, when his childhood interest developed into a serious career aspiration, things became difficult at home.
OliveTheBoy explained that his mother had different hopes for his future and wanted him to pursue a more conventional profession. At one point, he also envisioned himself becoming a doctor, but his growing love for music eventually changed his plans.
Choosing music meant going against his family’s expectations, and he admitted that he became rebellious in his determination to pursue his dream.
“I literally forgot about being a doctor and everything. I had to become a very rebellious child. She tried to arrest me. She said she would arrest me, but around that time I knew it wasn’t possible because I was already 18,” he shared.
Looking back, OliveTheBoy says he has no regrets about his decision, as his success today is proof that taking the risk to follow his passion was worthwhile.
