Public Transport Fares To Increase By 20% From June 2

Commuters across Ghana will have to brace for higher transportation costs as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana have announced a 20 percent increase in public transport fares nationwide.

The fare adjustment will take effect on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, and is expected to affect all forms of commercial road transport services across the country.

According to the transport operators, the decision was reached following consultations among key stakeholders in the transport sector amid rising operational costs. The increment is intended to help operators cope with increasing expenses associated with vehicle maintenance, spare parts, fuel, insurance, and other overhead costs.

The announcement means passengers who rely on commercial buses and minibuses for their daily commute will pay significantly more for transportation beginning next week.

Transport operators have argued that the fare review has become necessary to ensure the sustainability of their businesses and to enable them to continue providing services despite challenging economic conditions.

The latest increase is likely to place additional pressure on household budgets, particularly for workers, students, and traders who depend heavily on public transportation.

Many commuters have already expressed concern about the impact of the adjustment on their cost of living, noting that transportation remains one of the major expenses for many Ghanaian families.

The fare hike is expected to have a ripple effect on the prices of goods and services, as transportation costs often influence the cost of doing business across various sectors of the economy.

Passengers are being advised to take note of the new fares and cooperate with transport operators when the revised rates take effect on June 2.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana are expected to provide further details on the implementation of the new fares in the coming days.
