GAF Removes Seidu Abagre From Bawku

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has confirmed that Alhaji Seidu Abagre, identified as a rival chief in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, has been removed from the town by security agencies.

In a statement dated December 24, the minister said the operation was carried out by personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces in line with recommendations contained in the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

According to the statement, Alhaji Seidu Abagre was taken out of Bawku on the afternoon of December 24 and is currently safe in the custody of the security agencies. The minister said the action was taken to support peace and stability in the area.

The removal follows the presentation of the mediation report by the Asantehene to President John Dramani Mahama on December 16. The report was the outcome of a mediation process initiated to address the long running chieftaincy dispute in Bawku.

Among the recommendations in the report was a call for government to guarantee the safe passage of Alhaji Seidu Abagre out of Bawku as part of measures to de escalate tensions and create space for dialogue.

While presenting the report, the Asantehene proposed the establishment of a reconciliation committee to guide the peace process. He suggested the involvement of the National Peace Council and the nomination of legal representatives from both sides to support structured engagement.

President Mahama welcomed the report and assured that the recommendations would be given due consideration. He said government would issue a statement outlining its position within 24 hours.

A subsequent statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that government had accepted all the recommendations contained in the mediation report.

Security agencies have not provided further details on the duration or conditions of Alhaji Seidu Abagre’s stay outside Bawku. Authorities say additional steps towards reconciliation will be communicated as the process unfolds.
